    Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Breathe easier and get back into life.

Is a breathing problem keeping you from living life to the fullest? Rome Memorial Hospital’s outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program can help you breathe easier again, by slowly rebuilding your physical strength and conditioning, while also providing you with education and information on how to better manage your chronic lung disease.

A team of healthcare professionals will work with you to formulate a personalized treatment plan that will enable you to do more of the things you enjoy. Many people with lung disease feel shut off from the rest of the world because they’re afraid to leave home. We’ve had people who were barely able to make it into our office at the beginning who are able to return to doing the things they love, such as going on a vacation, visiting family out of town, and playing sports such as bowling and golf. In short, this program changes lives.

    We are on your team

Rome Memorial Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is certified by the American Association for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Achieving certification demonstrates our commitment to deliver the highest standard of care by following evidence-based guidelines.

    What can you expect?

An individualized treatment plan, designed just for you, will help you set and meet realistic goals. Patients usually attend one-hour sessions, 2-3 times a week for 6-12 weeks.
    Included in the plan are:

    • Exercise to help you increase endurance, strength and flexibility. You may ride a stationary bike, walk on a treadmill or do exercises in a chair. You will be taught stretches to do before and after exercise and you may also use weights to build strength. Your pulse rate and oxygen levels will be checked throughout the exercise.
    • Education to inform you on how the lungs work and how your lung problem affects your breathing.
    • Medication and equipment education, so you will know exactly how and when to take medications and how to use oxygen (if prescribed).
    • Breathing techniques to help you learn to control shortness of breath.
    • Tips to help you pace yourself to give you more energy and help you do more in your daily activities.

A maintenance program is also available for people who want to continue to exercise in a supported environment.
