• Free, drop-in support group focuses on creativity, fellowship

“Give it a Whirl” for Wellness meets Monday, Aug. 6

A support group will be held Mondays during the month of August for anyone coping with health and wellness challenges. The group is offered through the collaboration of the Center for Family Life and Recovery and Rome Memorial Hospital Radiation Medicine.
“Give it a Whirl” for Wellness is a creative way to socialize, help and be helped by others with similar conditions or circumstances.
“Give it a Whirl” for Wellness is an opportunity for people learning to cope with health and wellness challenges, whether it is quitting smoking for good, overcoming illness or treatments, or facing life changes, to meet with others in similar situations. More than a support group, it gives Individuals, family and friends an opportunity to come together in a welcoming, comfortable, and inspiring way.
The free meetings will be centered around a creative activity led by the Center for Family Life and Recovery Mondays at Rome Memorial Hospital Radiation Medicine, 107 E. Chestnut St., Rome:
     Aug. 6, 2-3 p.m.: Make a Birdhouse-style address sign
 Aug. 13, 6-7 p.m.: Learn the quiet craft of quilling
     Aug. 20, 2-3 p.m.: Chair Yoga
 Aug. 27, 6-7 p.m.: Paint a “Recovery Rock” and place it for someone else to find
The public is encouraged to attend any or all of the meetings. No registration is necessary. There is easy access and plenty of parking on the east side of the building.
Life’s challenges can sometimes be overwhelming. When that happens, discovering a network of support, friendship and hope helps people learn how to cope. It can be helpful to meet and talk with people who know exactly what you are going through, because they have been there, too.
“Our informal group is centered around a creative activity,” said Amy Weakley, director of Rome Memorial Hospital Radiation Medicine. “Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, you will be encouraged by what you will create during this time of sharing and learning from others.”
Benefits from participating in groups that offer support and a creative outlet may include:
    • Feeling less lonely or judged
    • Improving coping skills
    • Reducing stress or anxiety
    • Learning from others with similar experiences
    • Gaining a sense of control
    • Learning new ways to improve your health and wellness
